“Oh My God!”

When I first began working at the Markey Cancer Center here in Lexington, KY, I was outfitted with a beautiful office in a space that had once been a chapel. One wall was a stained glass window, and depending on the time of day, beautiful shades of blue, red, yellow, and green would stream across the treatment table. It took a while for patients to start making appointments to see me in my tranquil treatment room. I spent the first month away from the room, sharing short sessions in the chemotherapy clinic.  Then Amir showed up.

Amir was the tallest person I’d ever worked with, well over 6’6”. Luckily my table had an extension so I could make him comfortable with his long legs and feet right to the edge.  He was a philosopher and religious thinker with a very loud and compelling voice. He spent most of our first treatment talking about God and his various conversations on the subject with his friends from all religious backgrounds. He was extremely interested in the translation of Jin Shin Jyutsu as “The Creators Art Through the Person of Knowing and Compassion”. How did I describe the Creator and what was my role?  We had a fascinating discussion until he drifted off in deep relaxation.

After the treatment concluded and Amir awoke, and pronounced with his booming voice, “I feel great!!!” He got off the table, shook my hand strongly with lots of “Thank You!” and said he’d call for another appointment soon. He left, closing my door after him.  In the hallway, I heard him loudly exclaim again, this time “OH MY GOD!!!!!”

I think he liked his session.
