No trip to the ER
It was another weekly visit at the outpatient clinic and I was seeing my usual round of women in recovery from substance use for their Jin Shin Jyutsu treatments and self-care training. I had stopped in to see Jan, one of the clinic social workers to visit before the day got started. We spoke briefly about the finger holds for emotions and how she was using them with the women who she worked with. Just a start to a regular day.
The next week’s visit started the same way. A quick hello with Jan. This one was different though. “I have to tell you what happened!”
A few days earlier, one of the women being seen in the clinic for substance use started experiencing a racing heart and panic during her regular visit. Her blood pressure became dangerously high and the paramedics were called. Due to her known addiction to cocaine it was thought that she had used and was experiencing an overdose effect. The clinic was going crazy as they waited for the medics to take her to the ER. The woman protested that she had not been using between panicked breaths.
“Everyone was trying to calm her down without success. I remembered about the finger holds we’d talked about last week, but I didn’t know which one to use. The first thing that came to me was to have her hold her thumb. The doctors were certain she was having a response to cocaine and stood by in disbelief as her heart rate began to drop and her blood pressure stabilized. It was the thumb hold that helped. It didn’t take long for her to relax and begin to breathe normally. We all gave a huge sigh of relief, especially her.”
No trip to the ER that day and a number of new Jin Shin Jyutsu converts.
